Bike protest in Port Louis to demand removal of taxes on fuel
A handful of social activists took to the streets of Port Louis on Wednesday 17 March on bicycles to protest against taxes of fuel.
The unusual rally was led by activists Raouf Khodabaccus and Ivann Bibi. They were joined by half a dozen of other protesters who toured the streets of the capital city, Port Louis.
Protesters demanded the abolition of the various fuel taxes – which are reportedly used for the construction of drains, COVID solidarity fund and the acquisition of COVID-19 vaccines. A significant portion of the vaccines were received as donation, they claimed.
According to the demonstrators, the removal of these various taxes will help contain the retail price of fuel and other commodities.
Protesters also asked the resignation of ministers and the heads of state-run entities allegedly responsible for the “current situation”.
“You can’t put everything on Ukraine. The people had enough. We can no longer bear it anymore,” they claimed.
