Spectre of new COVID-19 wave: 18 more deaths, 2,337 active cases

COVID-19 continues to be rife on the island. Over the period 24 February to 02 March 2022, 18 additional deaths were attributed to COVID- 19, according to latest figures just released.

As at 02 March 2022, there were officially 2,337 active cases of COVID-19 in Mauritius, out of which 14 were admitted at the New ENT Hospital.

For the same period, there were 492 active cases in Rodrigues. Six persons were admitted at Mont Lubin Treatment Centre.

Several media have reported on the sudden activity at the Ministry of Health regarding the COVID-19 situation.

Le Mauricien reported on the acquisition of over 4.9 million Molnupiravir pills for 123,760 people.

Health sources were cited as saying the order is “not excessive, but reasonable.”

Defi Media reported that 20 ICU ventilators are also being ordered, with at least 12 of these ventilators to be installed and operational within 16 weeks.

The spectre of a new wave of COVID-19 is increasingly being feared. Ex-Director of Health Dr Vasantrao Gujadhur claimed there could be 125,000 people infected in Mauritius in the coming weeks.
