Mauritian companies pay employees Rs637million in compensation

Mauritian companies have paid over Rs637 million as compensation to their employees during the financial year 2020/2021.

Defi Media cited figures from the Ministry of Labour as claiming that the compensation was in relation to 39,303 disputes between employers and employees.

Trade Unionists said this amounts to an average of only Rs16,200 per employee, “and shows how easy it is to sack people.”

A significant portion of compensation was reportedly paid to Bangladeshi workers.
