Mauritius Central Bank worried about Russia/Ukraine war
Bank of Mauritius Governor Harvesh Seegolam has warned that the Russia/Ukraine conflict could have serious economic impacts on Mauritius.
“The conflict will have a direct impact on Europe. And since it is part of our main markets, we’ll definitely face the brunt,” he said.
The conflict, according to a group of small traders, will prompt closure of more businesses.
According to spokesperson Raj Appadu, an escalation of the conflict will disrupt maritime trade, with further increases in the price of freight.
“It’s the small businesses that will suffer most,” he told Defi Media.
In an interview with l’Express, Russian ambassador to Mauritius, Konstantin Klimovskiy, defended his country’s move into Ukraine.
He criticised the United States and Europe to try to expand NATO to the east.
He also accused the West for using the “new media to legitimise sanctions against countries.”
