Fuel prices in Mauritius shoot up again by 10%, the second time in two months

According to Petroleum Pricing Committee (PPC), the increase took effect from midnight this Saturday, February 26, 2022.

The price of gasoline has been increased from Rs 55.75 to Rs 61.30 per litre. The price of diesel soared from Rs 41 to Rs 45.10 per litre.

Local media quote the PCC as clarifying that the price of gasoline should have gone up by about by Rs10.00 per liter or 19.72%, in December 2021. That of diesel should have increased by Rs13, 55 per liter or 36.33%.

However, it said, increases are limited to 10% only.

The benchmark crude price has soared to $114.28  in the international market while the exchange rate has significantly depreciated. The application of additional petroleum taxes and levies is also of concern among consumer rights activists.
