It's now three ships stuck on the reefs off coast Pointe aux Sables

After the grounding of a Taiwanese boat off Pointe-aux-Sables on Wednesday, February 23, two other vessels have also got stuck on the reefs in the same region, around 1 kilometre from the coast and only a few kilometres from Port Louis harbour.

Corroborative media reports have it that the three vessels got stuck on the reefs, one after the other.

Officers of the National Coast Guard have reportedly had a tough time to evacuate the crew of the three fishing vessels.

The Wen Hung Dar was reportedly the first to send out a distress signal It is 50 meters long and 6 mothers wide. It carries 90 tonnes of diesel.

After being saved, the 25 crew members were reportedly taken to Police Headquarters in Port Louis for questioning. A few of them were reportedly slightly injured.

Shipping Minister Sudheer Maudhoo was cited by the local media as stating there were no leaks so far.

However, media reports showed images of NCG officers and private company PolyEco deploying oil booms around two vessels, “just in case”.

One of the vessels is said to be leaning dangerously on one side.

The incidents have triggered outcry against the Mauritius Ports Authority and the National Coast Guard.

“They didn’t learn from past lessons,” blasted Labour MP Arvind Boolell.

Maritime Expert Alain Malherbe called officials of the MPA and NCG as “incompetent”.
