Body of whale washes ashore in Rodrigues

The body of an unidentified whale was washed ashore on the beach at Riviere Banane in Rodrigues today, Sunday as the impact of tropical cyclone Emnita were felt across the Mascarene Islands.

It is believed the waves whipped up by heavy winds brought the mammal ashore.

Reporting on the unusual discovery, Defi Media said it was unable to confirm if the mammal was still alive.

It carried a picture taken by local Jean Steeve Lucchesi, which shows the body of a whale being moved about by waves.

Defi Media reported that officers from the National Coast Guard, the Ministry of Blue Economy and the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation were yet to attend to the scene.
