Police have urged Hindu socio-cultural associations to help in preventing mass gatherings at Grand Bassin for the Maha Shivratree 2022 festival, scheduled for 01 March this year.

Maha Shivaratree is one of the most important events in Hinduism – it is marked by a pilgrimage of hundreds of thousands to Grand Bassin Lake.

The associations were called for a meeting at the Police Headquarters late this week, during which Acting Commissioner of Police, Anil Kumar Dip, reiterated the need to respect the strict sanitary and restrictive measures currently in force so as to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Mauritius.

Media reports have it that arrangements were being made to distribute the water from Grand Bassin to temples around the island.

Devotees were earlier invited to do their prayers at Grand Bassin before scheduled event.
