Indonesia annoyed about Mauritius’s unresponsiveness over missing sailors

Indonesian authorities are increasingly annoyed about Mauritius’s unresponsiveness over seven sailors who mysteriously went missing in Mauritian waters a year ago.

The sailors had been reported missing in February 2021 and their whereabouts are still unknown.

Local l’Express newspaper had reported then that the Port CID suspected that the Indonesian sailors had been thrown overboard by Vietnamese crew members. No further information on the incident came out since then.

A year later, Indonesian authorities are now becoming more vocal on how they had to “encourage the Mauritius government to speed up the investigation and clarify the fate of the seven Indonesian citizens.”

According to CNN Indonesia, the matter was the subject of a press conference on 10 February 2022 by Judha Nugraha, the Director General of Protection for Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“An investigation was carried out because there were indications of a criminal act,” he said.

Judha claimed that various steps had been taken by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Antananavario, including seven diplomatic notes to “encourage the Mauritius government to speed up the investigation and clarify the fate of the seven Indonesian citizens.”

Media reports state that the country’s President Joko Widodo is now being roped in.

Gabriel Goa, of the Indonesian Legal and Human Rights Institution for Justice and Peace Advocacy, has been cited by the local media as urging President Widodo to intervene.

“We urge President Jokowi to order that information about the seven Indonesian sailors who went missing in Mauritius be made available, whether they are still alive or dead,” he said. “If they have died, then the authorities should reveal the cause of death.”

He said he is still in contact with the parents of the missing sailors.

“They are crying for help from the Indonesian authorities. They want clear information from the captain of the fishing boat and the Vietnamese crew members who are currently being held by the Mauritian police.”
