Labour asks Supreme Court to unfreeze party funds

The president of the Labour Party, Patrick Assirvaden, has reportedly lodged an affidavit before the Supreme Court in a bid to unfreeze one of the party’s accounts.

Defi Media reported that the account was frozen by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in 2015 following the arrest of Labour leader Navin Ramgoolam and the discovery of some Rs220 million in his personal coffers.

“The party is not able to operate properly. We have a financial problem. This account has nothing to do with what happened. It is essential that this account is made accessible to fund the activities of the party,” Assirvaden was cited as saying.

The case has been adjourned to February 14.
