Supreme Court orders recount of general election ballots in Constituency No.19

Supreme Court Judges Aruna Devi Narain and Denis Mootoo have ordered a recount of the 2019 general election votes in constituency No 19 (Stanley/Rose-Hill).

The major development came after serious discrepancies were reportedly noted in the election results.

MMM candidate Jenny Adebiro had contested her defeat – she came fourth – with 8,867 votes – only 92 votes behind Ivan Collendavelloo, who received 8,959 votes.

It was only when called to testify before the Supreme Court, two years after the elections, that the Electoral Commission confirmed the discrepancies.

Technically, exactly 1,200 ballots should have been counted in every voting room. But in some rooms, up to 1,226 ballots had been recorded.

Which led the Electoral Commissioner Irfan Raman to refrain from objecting to the recount of votes.

This has triggered a wave of criticisms against the Commission, including from other defeated candidates who are also contesting the 2019 general elections results.

Reacting to the ruling, MMM leader Paul Berenger said a victory for Jenny Adebiro was possible.

However, he said he will wait for the result of the recount of the ballots before commenting the matter further.

“What has happened at No 19 is of enormous proportions. The Electoral Commissioner has admitted that there was an error in the elections at No 19.”

After the ruling, ex-DPM Ivan Collendavelloo was reportedly shy of comments. Upon the insistence of reporters, he said he took note of the judgment, underlining that it is the Master and Registrar of the Supreme Court who will carry out the Recount and not the Electoral Commission.
