Quatre Bornes resident joins 'centenarian club'

Mrs Sookree Sayède of Rajkumar Street, Quatre Bornes, celebrated her 100th birthday, on Friday January 14, at her residence, surrounded by her family. 

Mrs Sayède, a widow, was born in Rose-Hill from Indian immigrants. She lost her mother when she was eight years old, and all her six siblings have passed away.

Her husband, whom she married when she was 20 years old, was a carpenter, while Mrs Sayède took care of her six daughters and three sons. She has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

As birthday gift, Mauritian authorities offered Mrs Sayède a cheque of Rs 21,836; a blender; a mobile phone with 50 free calls; a bouquet; the centenarian medal; and a certificate for her service. She will from now on received a monthly pension of Rs 21,710.

She also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 and gifts from the Senior Citizen Council.
