Henley Passport Index 2022: Mauritian passport ranks 31st worldwide

London-based company Henley & Partners has ranked the Mauritian passport as the 31st most powerful worldwide in its 2022 Henley Passport Index.

The index compares 199 passports and lists 227 destinations, ranking passports based on the number of visa-free destinations their holders can access.

Alongside Mauritius, holders of St. Lucia passport also have access to 146 visa-free destinations.

The Mauritian passport gained two points  from 2021 but kept the same ranking it had in 2020.

The Mauritian passport was the weakest in 2009 (48th) and the most powerful in 2014 (27th).

Leading the ranking across Africa is Seychelles (28th worldwide), followed by Mauritius (31st) and South Africa (51st). Eritrea (100th), Congo (101st), Sudan (102nd), and Libya (103rd) come in last.

In the Gulf, the UAE comes in 15th globally (175 visa-free destinations).

Japan and Singapore tie for first place with access to 192 visa-free destinations, while second place goes to both Germany and South Korea (190 destinations).

Italy, Finland, Spain, and Luxembourg tied for third position. Denmark, Austria, France, the Netherlands, and Sweden are fourth in the ranking.

Meanwhile Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan come last in the global ranking, with visa-free access to only 29, 28, and 26 destinations, respectively.

The evaluation takes into account exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
