Water crisis: Nine residents of Bambous Virieux arrested

Nine residents of Bambous Virieux, a coastal village in the south, were arrested on Thursday, January 6 by the Criminal Investigation Division of Mahébourg after protesting over lack of clean drinking water.

The nine have been accused of having taken part in a protest on December 26, 2021 denouncing acute water shortages in their village that allegedly lasted two months.

The residents of Bambous Virieux appeared at Grand-Port District Court on Thursday afternoon. They were all released on bail after paying a bail amount of Rs 2,500 and acknowledge a surety of Rs 10,000 each.

On leaving court, one of the residents, Hervé Lagaillarde was quoted by Defi Media as denouncing his arrest as being arbitrary.

According to social activist George Ah-Yan, supports these residents, a new symbolic demonstration will be organized in the coming days to denounce their miseries.
