Met Office issues ‘Heavy Rain Warning’ effective Thursday 10pm

The Mauritius Meteorological Services has issued a ‘Heavy Rain Warning’ this Thursday effective as from 10pm.

“The South and the Central Plateau are already having scattered showers with thunderstorms. The thundery showers will spread elsewhere in the evening. Water accumulations are likely in low lying areas,” it has warned.

The warning came a day after it claimed that active clouds associated with an instability zone were approaching our region from the west. The clouds, it said, will cause heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms as from Thursday evening.

In its latest warning, the Met Office said the “convective clouds to the east of Madagascar extending to the west of the Mascarenes have increased significantly over the last 24 hours.”

The Met Office explained that most ‘Numerical Weather Prediction’ models expect a shallow low to develop to the east of Madagascar as from Monday morning.

“This low-pressure area will establish a light northerly flow over our region causing a very moist and unstable weather over Mauritius until Monday 10 January 2022,” it said.
