Minister contradicts earlier claim that 'everything's ok'

In a reply in Parliament, Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Sunil Bholah, has contradicted his own statement claiming that there had been no redundancies in the SME sector.

To a question by Labour MP Michael Sik Yuen, Minister Bholah admitted that some 10,000 employees in SMEs were laid off in 2020, all linked to the downsizing in several companies, especially in the hotel sector.

Defi cited figures from the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) showing that some 40 SMEs shut down.
