A “quite well decayed” dead baby sperm whale has been discovered washed up on a beach in Rodrigues.

Two fishermen reportedly spotted the 10-meter carcass near Pointe-Coton beach on Tuesday.

Jean Rex Pierre Louis, Project Manager at the local South East Marine Protected Area was cited as telling Defi Media that the baby sperm whale, weighing about 3 tonnes, had been removed from the beach and  “buried in a secured area.”

He added the cause of death could not be ascertained given its state.
