Mauritius inflation hits 11.5% in August

Year-on-year (Y-o-y) inflation in August 2022 rose to 11.5% in August 2022, compared to 6.0% in August 2021, according to latest figures released by Statistics Mauritius.

Inflation is a measure of the rate of rising prices of goods and services in an economy. If inflation is occurring, leading to higher prices for basic necessities such as food.

Headline inflation for the 12-months ending August 2022 soared to 8.8%, compared to 3.0% for the 12-months ending August 2021.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.4 point or 0.3% from 124.0 in July 2022 to 124.4 in August 2022.

The main contributors to the change in the index between July 2022 and August 2022 were: Meat, vegetables, powdered milk, other food products, whisky, other goods and services.
