Consumers Association warn of more protests 'if fuel prices don't go down'

After the success of the motorcade organised by the Consumers Association of Mauritius (ACIM) on May 28, 2022, secretary general Jayen Chellum, has called for a televised debate on petroleum products with the Director of the State Trading Corporation, Rajiv Servansingh.

He claimed the State-owned broadcaster MBC TV had earlier rejected the request.

“I reiterate my call for a debate on the dubious mechanisms in place to rip off the population through unjustified levies and taxes,” Chellum was cited as telling Defi Media.

He has reportedly warned Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy of more protests across the country if the prices of petrol and diesel are not brought down in the upcoming Budget.
