COVID-19 surge in schools only days after classes resume

Fear of a new coronavirus surge is growing among parents and educators, only a few days after Mauritian schoolchildren and teachers returned to the classroom.

Several media reports suggest the COVID-19 cases have been discovered in at least three schools.

Clive Anseline, of the Diocesan Catholic Education Service, has told Le Mauricien that the surge was predictable.

“When we asked to reopen the schools, we knew that this risk existed. School administrations are enforcing the health protocols. We need to be resilient in the face of the coronavirus and ensure educational continuity,” he told the newspaper.

He advised parents not to send their sick child to school.

During the week, some twenty Grade 3 students of the Emilienne Rochecouste Primary school were sent home after their teacher was tested positive for COVID-19.

The father of one of the children was quoted as criticising the “confusion” around the health protocol in schools.

Two students of a secondary school in Port Louis were also tested positive during the week.

Questions are also being raised on the understanding of school administrations in the implementation of Government protocols.

An 18-year-old student of an elite secondary school was banned from his classroom on the ground that he was not vaccinated against COVID-19.

Despite the insistence of the parents, the school allegedly refused to put in writing that the decision was in line with official protocols.
