Rodrigues situation 'out of control', opposition calls for 15-day lockdown

Political parties in Rodrigues are pressing for a 15-day “lockdown” in the island.

So far, 4,000 positive cases have been recorded on the island. Two people reportedly died during the last 48 hours.

The island’s opposition parties described the situation as being “out of control”.

“The lockdown will help ‘break the chain of transmission’ of COVID-19 on the island before regional elections,” they added.

The elections were originally scheduled for February 13, but were eventually postponed to Sunday February 27 by a decree of the Office of the President of the Republic.
