Murderer of bank employee authorised to appeal to Privy Council

The Privy Council has granted a ‘special leave’ to Jiaved Ruhumatally, found guilty of the murder Gérald Lagesse, Customer Service Supervisor of the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB).

Ruhumatally, convicted to 40 years prison by the Mauritian Supreme Court, will be authorized to plead his case before the Privy Council 17 years after the murder.

According to the local l’Express newspaper, Lagesse was killed during a bank robbery by Ruhumatally and his acolytes Steve Monvoisin and Laval Sambacaille.

The two faced a separate trial and pleaded guilty to the murder – they were convicted for 16 years.

On the other hand, Ruhumatally – who had pleaded not guilty – received a 42-year sentence, which was later reduced to 40 years.
