Here's why you could face slower internet as from Monday

In case you feel your internet is slower than usual, it may not necessarily be due to bad weather, but probably from works being undertaken on the Lower Indian Ocean Network (LION / LION 2) submarine fibre optic cable.

The works begin this Monday, January 10, 2022 in the Nyali lagoon in Kenya, according to a press release from Mauritius Telecom. The telecommunications company is part of the LION / LION 2 consortium.

According to MT, it has become urgent and imperative to carry out these works in order to prevent the risk of major breakdowns.

It seems that the section of the LION / LION 2 cable, which is in Kenyan waters, has shifted and could suffer serious damage if it is not serviced. During the operation, corrective actions will be applied to secure the cable.

During this maneuver, disruptions should be expected, including the risks of slower connection. The works are expected to last until the end of the week.

Mauritius Telecom has reassured that measures have been taken to mitigate the impact on its services.
