MV Wakashio insurer to pay Rs 112,000 to fishers and fishmongers

A compensation of Rs 112,000 will be paid by the insurer of the ill-fated MV Wakashio, Japan P&I Club, to Mauritian fishers, applicant fishers and fishmongers for the loss of earning as a result of the MV Wakashio oil spill in July last year.

Some 825 fishermen, and 174 fishmongers are among the recipients. And they have reportedly agreed with the amount being offered to them.

Mauritian authorities said the compensation was calculated on the basis of the average income they received as per the reported daily catch made by all fishermen in terms of amount and species, and reported to Fisheries posts over the last three years.

The amount was estimated at Rs 27,000.
