Restricted slaughter quota could entail meat shortage, butchers warn

Butchers in several markets across the island are up at arms against a decision by the Mauritius Meat Authority (MMA) to restrict the quota of animals meant for slaughter, including beef, goat and sheep.

They told l’Express newspaper that the decision could lead to a shortage of meat during the festive period.

The restricted slaughter quota is effective from December 20 until January 2.

Some butchers interviewed by the newspaper said they have requested a meeting with the director of MMA, but they didn’t receive any response.

However, MMA director Rajesh Daumoo was quoted as saying the state entity is faced with a shortage of staffs.
