Mauritius, through the Fashion and Design Institute (FDI), has won the Best Stylist prize at the fashion show of the 7th Edition of the Salon International du Textile Africain 2021 (SITA).

The event was held from 10 to 13 November 2021 in Djibouti and brought together some 32 countries from the African continent.

The prize comprised a trophy, a certificate and a cheque of USD 2,650.

The Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah said the event was an ideal platform to promote Mauritian know-how in the field of textile and clothing on the African continent.

Activities during the event, underlined the Minister, included: showcasing of traditional African outfits; a conference around various themes; a fashion show; and a Cotton Night (Award ceremony for the best stylists of the fashion show, the best exhibition stand, the best model, among others).

Mauritius was awarded the Best Stylist prize after having presented a collection in four categories, namely, traditional outfit, informal outfit, evening dress and creativity.

The FDI offers university courses in the fields of fashion, digital design, graphics and jewellery-making.

The textile and clothing sector represents a market of USD 31 billion in sub-Saharan Africa.
