The coronavirus has officially claimed 43 lives in Mauritius since March 2021.

Of these victims, 5 had received the jab, while 38 were not vaccinated.

The figures were released on Sep 17 by the Ministry of Health, Defi Media reported.

Unofficially the death count may have reach 99. However, the victims were said to suffer from other medical conditions – so their death was not officially linked to the COVID-19.

The official figures have been criticised by the opposition’s Labour Party, arguing the ‘real situation’ is worse than what is ‘being claimed.’

Some 550 passengers are currently in quarantine, and so are 157 Mauritians who have been in contact with positive patients.

2,276 people positive for COVID-19 are in self-isolation. Such is also the case for 2,823 people who have been in contact with those tested positive.

Mauritius currently has 2,567 active cases with 34 patients are admitted to ENT Hospital in Vacoas.

Globally, around 4.7 million people have died so far from the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.
