Mauritius hits all-time high record of COVID cases

The number of positive cases screened for the month of August has attained 6,597, a record number since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The high number of contamination cases has also claimed a higher death toll, with 13 reported dead in August.

The total number of official deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic on the island stands at 21.

Meanwhile, the Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Health, Dr Catherine Gaud, has claimed that the new variant C.1.2 was detected on two passengers who travelled to Mauritius, the first one in January, departed from Kenya and the second one, departed from South Africa and arrived on the island in June.

She added that only one variant has been detected in Mauritius, the B.1.1.318.

According to the yet-to-be peer- reviewed study posted on the preprint repository MedRxiv, virologists fear that this specific virus is more transmissible and more resistant to vaccines.
