The death of Olivette Goder, 68, mother of nine, on July 27, has been attributed to COVID-19. She was originally admitted at SSRN Hospital, but her body was eventually transferred to Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq.

However, the conditions in which the funeral was scheduled to be conducted and the body was to be buried at Bigara cemetery was rigorously denounced. “The body was placed in a clumsy wooden box, which was not even properly closed. It was as if they had come to bury an animal,” relatives were cited as saying.

On the forceful refusal of the victim’s children to conduct the funeral in this manner, officials took the body back to ENT Hospital to be placed in a coffin.
