Labour Parliamentary Leader Dr Arvin Boolell has been suspended for eight upcoming parliamentary sessions following a motion presented by PM Pravind Jugnauth today. Defi Media reported that the Speaker “named” Dr Boolell for intervening “when he did not have the floor.”

Showing a certain annoyance, Arvin Boolell then called the Speaker, Sooroojdev Phokeer, a “batiara (person of lowly standards), following which the session was suspended.

The incident happened while Opposition Leader Xavier-Luc Duval was quizzing Minister of Finance, Renganaden Padayachy on the Mauritius Investment Corporation Ltd.

He wanted to know about the steps taken to ensure full transparency of funding requests that were approved and disbursements made to date. “We have lost 5 years of wealth during the crisis,” Padayachy said, adding that Rs30billion had been used to help companies in difficulty.
