Government pockets Rs527 million from petrol tax

The government pocketed Rs 527.8 million from November 2020 to date through tax on gasoline and petroleum products to be donated to the COVID-19 Solidarity Fund, Labour and Trade Minister Soodesh Callichurn was quoted as telling Parliament.

The government had set up a Solidarity Fund in March 2020 to help citizens and the community in general affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opposition MP Aadil Ameer Meea also wanted to know if the government intended to review the new tax of Rs 2.30 introduced for the acquisition of vaccines. The questions has not been debated, the Minister replied.
