A Court of Investigation will kick off works today with the first hearings to shed light on the sinking of the tug Sir Gaëtan on the night of August 31, 2020. It sank while it was heading to Port-Louis after helping in the operations related to the wreck of MV Wakashio.

Three crew members died and one went missing during the incident that took place off coast Poudre d’Or. The three victims were Addisson Jimmy Sylvain, Seewoo Sujit Kumar and Laval Lindsay Plassan. Captain Moswadeck Bheenick had gone missing and his body was never found.

Almost 11 months later, a Court of Investigation will listen to all parties: it will be led by former judge Gerard Angoh.

About twenty witnesses will be called to testify during the hearings. Police investigators and Mauritius Port Authority (MPA) officers will first to be heard. They will be followed by crew survivors, MPA Port Master Gervais Barbeau and his deputy Kavidev Newoor – both were arrested by police during the investigation.
