Some 56 containers – each 20 feet long – belonging to the Mauritius Shipping Corporation Ltd (MSCL) have disappeared from the Port, despite it being one of the most regulated and security-tight areas on the island.

In a police complaint, the MSCL’s Technical / Procurement Executive said he found the discrepancy while conducting a physical inventory.

However, out of the 942 containers owned by the MSCL (which are managed by a third party), only 849 were physically verified – 83 containers had disappeared.

According to l’Express, the MSCL sought explanations from the third-party management company – which stated that 17 containers were piled in its yard or in the quarry, and 27 others were reportedly “moving around”. But no one had records of the remaining 29 containers.

A copy of the serial numbers of the missing containers and an inventory report were submitted to the police.
