Bakers demand to raise bread prices

The Mauritius Bakers Association (ABM) are reportedly pushing for an increase in the price of bread, after the depreciation of the rupee and the rise in the price of diesel by Rs 2 per litre.

Le Mauricien quoted ABM President Nasser Moraby as claiming that a meeting with Commerce Minister Soodesh Callichurn has been sought.

“We need to explain why such an increase is needed. The price of bread was last reviewed in 2012. Since then, many things have changed.”

He claimed that the Association has been raising the issue since 2018.

“But there were elections in 2019 and then Yogida Sawmynaden resigned as Minister of Commerce. This file is sitting in a drawer somewhere at the Ministry for the last three years.”

The price of common bread is fixed by the Ministry of Commerce.
