Hundreds of fake COVID-19 vaccination cards are believed to be in circuation, according to a report by Hebdo/Defi Media.

Police are reportedly tracking two groups of fraudsters that are said to be operating from Port Louis and Plaines Wilhems.

The vaccination cards are readily handy to all public officers who are involved in the vaccination process. Any of them could have easily picked the cards,” the newspaper quoted an unnamed police officer as saying. Investigators suspect officials of the Ministry of Health to also be involved in the scam.

“The vaccination history is fake but genuine stamps of the Ministry have been used.”

The fraud was unveiled by Opposition MP Farad Aumeer in Parliament during the week.

A fake card is said to cost around Rs4,000 and up to Rs5,000 for one stamped for both doses.
Sought for a reaction, Dr Zouberr Joomaye, a spokesperson of the COVID-19 Communication Committee said the Government takes the situation very seriously and announced that a digital version of the card is being worked on.

“The Committee is chaired by Minister of IT and Innovation, Deepak Balgobin. It will have a QR Code,” he said.
