Heavier fines for polluters

Polluters will soon be slapped with heavier fines if found guilty of pollution, the Ministry of Environment has announced.

Those found throwing wastes in drains, rivers and on beaches will be fined a ‘fix penalty’ between Rs3,000 to Rs5,000.

For cases of ‘illegal dumping’, fines can go up to Rs 25,000.

Defi Media reported an increase of 2% in wastes in 2020 with some 500,000 tonnes of garbage now buried at Mare-Chicose.

At this rate, the country’s wastes are set to reach 600,000 tonnes by 2030.
