Mauritius Bar Council denounce lawyer's arrest as 'unacceptable'

The President of the Bar Council, Yatin Verma, has severely criticized the Police over the arrest of lawyers Rama Valayden and Shahzaad Mungroo at 2am.

“This way of doing things is unacceptable,” he told Le Mauricien at Jeetoo Hospital, along with other lawyers, in support to Valayden and his wife, who fell unconscious in front of the CCID offices this morning.

In a communique issued during the day, and published by l’Express, the Bar Council claimed that “without in any what interfering in the police enquiry and the merits of the matter, the Bar Council strongly condemns the manner in which these arrests were effected. The Council saw no urgency or necessity in arresting Rama Valayden at his residence when he could have been called for questioning today during normal working hours.”
